About Joanne Abbott

Joanne Abbott ARTIST STATEMENT

Why do I draw? Why do I paint? Simple answer I love to create. I love to see a blank canvas transformed into a work of art. My paintings do not strive for realism but more for captivating the emotions that were felt when the subject was first viewed. I am inspired by nature and my work reflects both its simplicity and complexity. From the gnarled texture of tree bark , to the intricacies of a sparrow's feathers to the softness of a baby's cheek. Painting and drawing is for me a very thoughtful process, although I love the freedom to just pick up a brush and with no clear plan... create. I love the freedom to take multiple paths, use a variety of materials and tools at my disposal, and just have fun. Having said that I also love the controlled, detailed work of pencil that allows me to build layers and depth of colour and texture. My medium of choice is acrylics for its versatility, both in medium and tools, its ease of application , and I particularly love the use of both brush and palette knife to apply bold colours and create fabulous textures. Recently I have added mixed media to my repertoire, primarily paper collage. Art is a way I connect with nature and allows me to see more than what is right in front of me. Art is learning and creating, both which fuel my passion in life.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Joanne is a Canadian artist working in a variety of mediums which include graphite, colour pencil, watercolour and acrylics. She started her career as a physiotherapist in the eighties and in the late nineties while raising her 3 children she picked up a paint brush and started painting. Excited about her new hobby she was able to take a few workshops with notable artists in watercolour and pastel (1998). During that time she started commissioned works in graphite and colour pencil, primarily portraits as well as taking up decorative painting with acrylics. Joanne moved to Temiscaming, Quebec in 2000 and put the brushes aside while focussing on family. It was in 2011 Joanne resumed her passion for painting with tremendous focus and hasn't stopped since. Presently Joanne exhibits her work in her own studio in Temiscaming, teaches art classes to children and adults, does commissioned pencil and colour pencil portraits and custom paintings for private collections as well as creating works for gallery exhibitions.
